A 23-year-old Hamilton woman has been charged with arson after an empty home on Cannon Street was destroyed Wednesday night.

Hamilton police say the woman is in custody and will appear in court Thursday.

Firefighters were called to a two-storey semi-detached home at 15 Cannon Street West just after 9:30 p.m.

When they arrived, officials say, the first floor, second floor and the attic were in flames.

"Multiple" fire trucks were dispatched and firefighters were able to put the flames out before they spread to neighbours at 11 Cannon Street West. Both homes appeared to be unoccupied.

Damage at 15 Cannon Street West is estimated at approximately $300,000, fire officials say.

Fire department information officer Claudio Mostacci said in an email that "the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been contacted to assist in determining the cause. There were no reported injuries to the public or firefighters."

Police did not reveal how they identified the woman after the fire, saying it's part of the investigation process. It's also unknown if the woman knows the people who live at the home.
