Kashmir tense after Kulgam killings

Kashmir remained tense on Thursday in the wake of four civilian deaths during a counter-militancy operation in Kulgam on Wednesday.

The authorities closed all major colleges and schools “as a precautionary measure”. However, students of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Sopore, and the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, held demonstrations on the campuses.

Security restrictions were also imposed in parts of Srinagar and south Kashmir. Protesters clashed with security forces in Kulgam and Kupwara. However, they were dispersed by the security forces.

A Hurriyat group held a protest at Eidgah.

Shops and business establishments remained shut. Transport remained off the roads. Internet and train services were stopped in south Kashmir.
