CHARMINAR: In a heartwarming gesture,
People for Animals (
PFA), an
animal welfare organisation, joined hands with the fire department officials to rescue a
Black Kite, a medium-sized bird of prey, entangled in
Chinese manja from a tree near Shah Function Hall at Nampally near Hyderabad on Wednesday.
PFA representative E Anirudh told TOI that their rescue team received a complaint about a bird desperately fighting for life while it was hanging by a sharp string used to fly kites from a tree.
The bird was desperately fighting for life.
“We immediately rushed to the spot, but realised that the bird was badly injured by the manja and it was out of our reach. So, we immediately decided to call the fire department officials who arrived in less than 15 minutes to the spot and rescued the bird,” Anirudh said.
The bird was badly injured by the manja.
He further informed that the fire department officials used a ladder to climb the tree and rescued the bird carefully.
However, one of the wings of the bird that got caught in the manja has to be amputated as it is badly injured.
"We will have to amputate the wing,” Anirudh said.
“We rushed the bird to the PFA shelter at Afzal Gunz for first aid and further treatment, but the injury is so severe that we will have to amputate the wing,” Anirudh said.
Even if the birds injured with manja are rescued, it becomes difficult to save them as it would have serious injuries, PFA officials said.
Most animals and birds are maimed for life, Joshi said.
“We try our best to save their lives, but most animals and birds are maimed for life, because of getting entangled in manja every year. The birds nursed back to life are forced to stay in cages for the rest of their lives,” PFA executive officer Dattatreya Joshi said.
