In a step towards adoption of electric vehicles in Haryana, State Government officials will soon use battery-powered cars in Gurugram. Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) are in the process of procuring 25 cars for officers. A Memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be signed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) with the Municipal Corporation and GMDA.
"On a pilot basis, the officials will use these cars for their official purpose. This would help in improving the environment. The electric vehicles will save huge fuel consumption, maintenance and operating cost of the vehicles," Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), V Umashankar, said.
The EESL has also started work on installing LEDs across the city to save power. The company has also started work to reduce the pollution and to run electric vehicles to save diesel and petrol costs. After signing the MOU, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority and MCG will get electric cars in about one month.
"Electric cars will be given special attention in the government offices at the place of diesel and petrol. It is going to be the first of its kind in the state of Gurugram. The vehicles will be given to the officers and it will replace the old vehicles," an official with the MCG, said.
Highly placed sources, once fully charged the electric cars will be able to travel 140 kilometres after that they will have to be charged again.
Electric car charging points will also be built for this the GMDA is being identified the place to create a charging station. Although it is not yet clear how many of charging station will be built.
Meanwhile, a charging point has been built in sector-34, located in the MCG office. More charging points can be made in other government offices including newly built PWD Rest House on old Jail road.
