POLICE were forced to close off part of a busy dual carriageway after a super-sized pothole put five cars off the road in one hour. Officers shut a section of the A34 after drivers complained that they had mangled tyres and wheels on the 7in-deep crater.

The 48-year-old nurse suffered a blowout and damage to her alloy wheel after finishing a 13-hour shift at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

She said: “As I was waiting for assistance, another car hit the pothole and had a blowout and broken alloy.
“The pothole had taken out five cars in the space of an hour. We measured it at seven inches deep.
“I feel very lucky that I didn’t have a serious accident.
