BENGALURU: A member of the notorious Bawaria gang, which has committed scores of chain snatching in the city, was shot at and nabbed by the police in Soladevanahalli on Tuesday midnight. The accused Ram Singh had managed to escape from the police on Tuesday afternoon, after trying to attack a policeman who stopped his bike.

Ram Singh alias Sumair alias Homi (35), a native of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, has sustained injuries in the incident.

According to police, there were three incidents of chain snatching in Yelahanka, Bagalur and Chikkajala police station limits on Tuesday morning. There was information that the offenders used a pulsar bike bearing a Punjab registration number to commit the crime. The police control room immediately alerted the police across the city with the vehicle number and description of the offenders. Constables Biradar and Imam Saab Karikatti, both attached to Soladevanahalli station, were checking the bikes at Lakshmipura Cross.

“Around 12.30pm, they noticed a pulsar bike bearing Punjab registration number being ridden by two men whose features matched the description given by the control room. As the constables tried to stop the bike, the suspects tried to knock then down. The constables, however, managed to escape and tried to nab the suspects. The suspects then tried to attack the policemen with a knife and when the policemen resisted, they left the bike and ran away into a eucalyptus grove and escaped. A case of attempt to murder was registered against them in Soladevanahalli station in this connection and the pulsar bike was seized,” the police said.

Senior officials immediately formed special teams to nab the suspects and the teams started searching for them in forest areas. “Around 11.50pm, a team found one of the suspects in the forest region at Kereguddadahalli in Somashettihalli. As the policemen asked him to surrender, he pulled a knife and tried to attack the policemen. In self defence, sub inspector of Nandini Layout station Somashekhar fired one round at the suspect leaving him injured in his right leg. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital,” the police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused was Ram Singh, a member of the notorious Bawaria gang. “Efforts are on to nab the other accused who is absconding,” the police added.
