Medicinal garden set up at Kerala's Poonthura Health Circle office

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A picturesque medicinal garden now adorns the premises of the Health Circle office of the Corporation at Poonthura. Set up using the compost from the aerobic bins installed on the office premises, the new garden boasts of a good collection of medicinal plants.  The harvest of the organic vegetables that were planted in the office compound of the health inspector was also held. Mayor V K Prasanth inaugurated the event by planting a gooseberry sapling.

The vegetable farming using compost obtained from the aerobic bins was initiated as part of the Corporation’s ‘Suchitvabhavanam Surakshitha Bhakshanam’ project.The organic vegetable farm and medicinal plant garden were set up and managed by junior health inspectors C Sreekumaran, Archana, Gopakumar and sanitation workers under the supervision of Sujith Sudhakar, Health Inspector, Poonthura. The Mayor praised the efforts by the staff for following an organic agricultural model. 

He further added the model needs to be emulated across the different offices of the Corporation and that steps would be taken towards this end. All the houses in the city ought to emulate this model, he added.

Health standing committee chairman K Sreekumar, Development Standing Committee chairman Vanchiyoor P Babu, councillors Peter Solomon, Priya Biju and Noorjahan; St Thomas Church, Poonthura, vicar Justin Jude; health supervisors Usha Kiran and Alexander planted the saplings.
