NEW DELHI: A dalit family at a village in
Aligarh allegedly misused the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in order to "make money". The incident was reported from
Vishnu colony in
Hastpur village of the district.
The victim family claimed that in a land dispute case, 10 cases under the SC/ST Act were lodged against them in the last six years.
Birendra
Singh, a member of the victim family, said that in 2010 he had a dispute with Vishnu over ownership of land, but the latter retaliated by lodging a case under the SC/ST Act against him.
SSP Rajesh Pandey said that on May 5, 2016 a case was registered by Vishnu under the Act. When police didn't act, Vishnu's wife complained to the SC/ST commission, which in turn questioned the DM and SSP. Initial probe revealed that Vishnu's family does this quite often and file cases under the ST Act to "earn compensation". So far he has got Rs 3,06,000.
The SSP said that a report has been sent to SC/ST commission. "Even after the report was submitted, Vishnu was trying to file another complaint that would be his eleventh one," he said.
