Disney launched the signature streaming platform for its sports network ESPN as part of a full redesign of its app on Thursday. The standalone subscription service, called ESPN+, offers MLB and NHL games, other sports like golf, cricket and rugby, the network's library of 30 for 30 documentaries and original programming like a Kobe Bryant-hosted basketball analysis show.
While cord-cutters are now able to get some ESPN content, ESPN+ does not have everything the TV network has. As CNET points out, NFL and NBA games are not available, nor are ESPN shows like SportsCenter. So if you want to watch the NBA playoffs, you're better off keeping your WatchESPN app through your cable provider for now.
ESPN+ is the first stage of Disney's effort to launch streaming platforms to compete with Netflix. A Disney-branded one with the company's vast library of movies, original Star Wars series and other programming is coming next year.
After a weeklong free trial, ESPN+ is $4.99/month or $49.99 annually. If you sign up before April 18, your free trial will last 30 days. It's available on iOS and Android, as well as on Apple TV, Amazon tablets and Fire TV products, Chromecast and Android TVs.
