23 from Vijayapura killed in road mishap in Maharashtra

Wreckage of the truck in which all the victims were travelling

VIJAYAPURA: Twenty-three people, mostly labourers, from different hamlets (tandas) of Vijayapura died in a road accident in neighbouring Maharashtra on Tuesday. An entire family of five were among those dead.

The accident occurred early morning at Satara district near Khandala tunnel. The police said the truck driver - which was carrying the labourers - lost control after hitting the divider. The truck is said to have toppled on the other side of the highway. Eighteen people, including eight women, died on the spot.
Among the 17 injured, who were admitted to Khandala Rural Hospital, five of them succumbed to injuries. Two men belonging to the same group were following the truck on a two-wheeler and they informed the police and helped in shifting the injured to the hospital. The deceased includes the lorry driver and an agent. The majority of deceased belonged to Lambanis community.

The ill-fated lorry was carrying 40 labourers who were migrating to Pune to work at a construction site in a private company. The deceased belong to the various thandas of the district — Madhabhai, Hadagali, Kudgi, Rajnal, Hitnali, Nagathan, and Dreva.

The deceased are Vittal B Rathod, 35, Kalavati V Rathod, 33, Kiran V Rathod, 12, Priyanka P Rathod, 19, and Devi Rani M Rathod, 20, of Madhabhai tanda, and belonged to the same family. The family leaves behind an 80-year-old woman and one-year-old baby. The other deceased are Rekha S Chavan, 58, Santosh K Nayak, 38, Mangalbai C Nayak, 45, Shantabai, 48, of Hadagali tanda, Arjun R Chavan, 25, Srikanth B Rathod, 30, Nikita S Rathod, 24, and Naveen B Rathod, 28, who lived in Kudgi Tanda.

The police said two of the victims were yet to be identified and they were also no sure about the age of a few of the deceased. The other deceased are Krishnaraya S Pawar and Vinod K Pawar of Rajanl tanda, Kiran Rathod and Sangeeta Rathod of Hadal Sanga tanda, Devananda S Rahod of Hitanli tanda, Mahadevi A Rathod of Nagatana, and Mehaboob R Attar and Majid M Attar of Devra tanda.  The bodies the victims were handed over to the family members after post-mortems.

Anand, a resident of Madhabhai tanda, said 90% of people from these tandas migrate to Maharashtra and Goa in search of work during summer months.
