Driver had no licence in first case, accused in second case on the run: police

A 12-year-old boy was crushed to death after a truck hit him in north-west Delhi’s Mahendra Park on Tuesday afternoon, the police said. The accused driver has been arrested, they added.

First information reports (FIRs) under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC have been registered in connection with both cases.

The boy has been identified as Rahul, a Class VIII student and resident of Jahangirpuri, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North- West) Aslam Khan.

“The driver, who has been identified as Sanjay, fled the spot but was arrested later. He does not have a driving licence,” Ms. Khan said.

The victim had stepped out of his house to buy something from a nearby shop when the incident happened, the police said.

“The truck was lifting debris from an under-construction house. The driver was reversing the vehicle and did not see the boy. The victim got crushed between wall of a house and the truck,” a senior police officer said.

He was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the officer added.

The incident was witnessed by a resident identified as Jagdish, the police said.

Mowed down

In the second incident, a 40-year-old woman identified as Salma, a resident of outer Delhi’s Aman Vihar, was mowed down by a tractor on Tuesday morning.

The police said she was riding pillion with a relative on Mubarakpur Road when the vehicle hit the duo.

“The woman died on the spot and her body was shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for post-mortem. The relative is said to be out of danger,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) M.N. Tiwari said.

The accused driver fled the spot leaving the tractor behind, the officer said, adding that teams have launched a search operation for the accused.
