Shooter Om Mitharval became the first Indian to win a medal on Wednesday; he gripped the men’s 50m pistol bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. This is his second medal of the Games. He had earlier won bronze in the 10m air pistol event. Jitu Rai, the defending champion of this event, finished eighth. After a successful gold rush in the first week of the CWG, Indian athletes are trying to maintain the strong start. The highlight for India was MC Mary Kom’s victory in the 48 kg semi-final bout against Sri Lanka’s Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku. The Olympic bronze medallist assured a silver medal for India. A win will see the Indian come closer to her maiden CWG gold while a loss will mean that she will have to be content with silver. Shreyashi Singh and Varsha Varman are competing in women’s double trap final.
In table tennis event, Maitreyee Sarkar beats PNG’s Vero Nime 11-2, 11-9, 11-2 to reach the next round in singles’s competition. Absolutely dominant show from the Indian. Vaishanvi Sutar loses to Nigeria’s Faith Obazuaye 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 in her singles competition.
