RBDCK to develop slip and service roads at Kundannoor for vehicle diversion

Piling for the Kundannoor flyover on NH Bypass will begin on June 25, prior to which the Roads and Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) will develop slip and service roads, it was decided at a stakeholder meeting convened here on Tuesday by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla.

The developing of slip roads on the junction’s southern side will enable diversion of vehicles through them, when barricades are erected for piling.

The slip roads and widened service roads will be ready before piling begins. The preparatory work is crucial to prevent the traffic chaos witnessed in Vyttila due to flyover work executed by the Public Works Department (NH wing), said official sources.

The slip roads will be built by filling the space between service roads and the NH Bypass carriageway so that they are at the same level. Even after barricading, it will be ensured that there is approximately 10-metre-wide tarred space for vehicles on each side of the road.

On the northern side of the junction, the median between the NH Bypass and service roads will be demolished, thereby ensuring a wide enough tarred surface for vehicles to proceed in two lanes, they said.

They added that instructions had been issued to agencies that had laid underground pipelines and cables at the centre of the junction to relocate them by April 24.

The police watchtower that protrudes into the free-left turn at the junction will be demolished.

Vyttila traffic

The traffic congestion at Vyttila eased on Tuesday evening as the police diverted vehicles that used to converge at the junction on Thammanam Road, through the underpass of Vyttila railway bridge. “This was done as vehicles that crossed the junction worsened traffic congestion on NH Bypass. With curbs imposed on movement of vehicles through the underpass in the opposite direction, we have begun permitting vehicles from Kaniampuzha Road to exit through the premises of Vyttila Hub,” said Abdul Salam, ACP of Edapally Traffic Police.
