NEW DELHI:  The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state police chief over the death in police custody of the father of a woman allegedly gang-raped by an MLA and his associates.

The human rights body sent notices to the UP chief secretary and the director general of police after taking suo motu cognizance of media reports about the death of the woman’s father due to alleged beating in police custody in Unnao district.

The incident reportedly occurred a day after the alleged rape victim tried to immolate herself near the UP chief minister’s residence accusing BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his aides of gang rape and alleging police inaction in filing a case against the MLA, his brother and their aides.

The NHRC has sought a detailed report within four weeks on the woman’s allegations, as also information on the action taken against “delinquent” police officials who refused to register an FIR in the matter.

It has also asked for an explanation as to why the UP police did not inform the Commission of the custodial death within 24 hours.

According to media reports, some miscreants forced their way into the house of the deceased on April 3 and thrashed him in front of his family members.

The family approached the police to lodge an FIR against the younger brother of the MLA, who allegedly led the group, and his aides. The FIR allegedly does not mention the name of the MLA’s brother. The police instead booked the deceased under various sections of IPC and arrested him.

The daughter of the deceased has alleged that the MLA had got her father killed as she was not willing to withdraw the gang rape complaint against him.The Commission said that the allegations, if true, raised serious issues of violation of human rights of the victim family.

PIL in SC seeks CBI probe into rape case

NEW DELHI: A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a probe by the CBI into the Unnao rape case. BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been accused by a woman of rape. The petitioner and advocate ML Sharma has also sought compensation and protection for the family of the victim.
