The seniors on Matanzas’s boys lacrosse team celebrated before and during the match Friday during Senior Night on their way to pummeling visiting Mandarin 17-1 and a nine-goal game for Jonah Robertson.

Robertson, one of the most prolific scorers in the history of a lacrosse program with plenty of them, was the go-to guy all match as the Pirates hopped on Mandarin from the start.

Fellow seniors Zachary Pease, Jackson Courson, Corey Gales and Ben Stuart also cashed in for scores. Jordan Mercarter had two goals and Matt Hinman added another to represent the underclassmen. Pease had two assists and Stuart added another in a big night for the class of 2018.

Robertson had a coveted hat trick before the period was done, scoring Matanzas’s second, sixth and seventh goals while Hinman and Mercarter both found the back of the net. Mandarin barely challenged Pirate goalie Armando Figueroa, in fact, barely had possession of the ball and made only one run at the Matanzas goal in the first 12 minutes.

In terms of elapsed time, the pre-match Senior Night ceremony honoring the players took almost as much time as the entire second half. In addition to Robertson, committed to Coker College in South Carolina, Courson, Figueroa, Stuart, Gales and Pease, the senior players honored included Luke D’Errico, Evan Gentry, Tanner Hyers, Bermenly, Jean-Baptiste, Elijah Jones, Anthony Masiello, Ryan O’Connor, Clay Parson, Logan Wells, Charlie Wicker, Trevor Woytan and Anthony Zheng.
