Civil aviation secretary R N Choubey today held a review meeting on the Navi Mumbai airport with Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Malik along with senior ministry officials as well as officials from the AAI, the DGCA and the state government.
During the meeting, the civil aviation ministry and and concessionaire Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) signed an initial pact to avail reserved services such as air traffic management, customs control, immigration, security, meteorological services, among others, for the new airport, an official release said.
GVK Power and Infrastructure (GVKPIL), a part of the GVK group, had in January this year signed a concession agreement with Cidco to create a special purpose vehicle, NMIAL, for developing the Navi Mumbai airport.
GVK through its subsidiary, Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), holds 74 per cent stake in NMIAL, while Cidco, the town planning authority, holds the balance 26 per cent.
The initial concession period is 30 years from the appointed date which is extendable for a further 10 years.
As per the memorandum of understanding signed by Choubey and GVK Reddy, chairman of NMIAL, a joint coordination committee will also be setup with representatives of all the agencies concerned, to ensure smooth and efficient rendering of the reserved services.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on February 18 laid the foundation stone of over Rs 16,000-crore greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will be built on 1,160 hectares land under the public-private partnership mode.
The second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is planned for a minimum capacity of 60 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with the first phase capacity pegged at 10 million passengers per annum.
Both the authority and concessionaire are moving ahead expeditiously with all the mandatory activities such as master plan finalisation, financial closure, appointment of independent engineer and execution of all agreements as per the concession agreement, the release said.
The financial closure is to be achieved within 180 days of the signing of the conecssionaire agreement, as per the release.
