Shooter Shreyasi Singh gives India its 12th Gold medal of Commonwealth Games

Indian shooter Shreyasi Singh gave India its 12th Gold medal of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast today. She bagged the coveted yellow metal in the Women's Double Trap event, after beating Aussie Emma Cox in the shootout. Emma settled for a Silver, while the Bronze went to Scotland's Linda Pearson. The other Indian in the event, Varsha Varman finished fourth.

In the Men's Double Trap, Ankur Mittal bagged a Bronze after finishing third. Ashab Mohammed ended fourth.Earlier in the day, in the Men's 50-metre Pistol event, Om Mitharwal finished third to claim his second Bronze of the Games. He had, earlier, won a Bronze in the 10-metre Air Pistol event. Jitu Rai, who had clinched Gold in that event, was today eliminated. He finished 8th.

In Boxing, five-time world champion MC Mary Kom assured herself of a Silver medal, in her maiden Commonwealth Games appearance. She defeated Sri Lanka's Anusha Koddithuwak, 5-0 to book a place in the 48 kg Final. Sarita Devi, however, lost her 60 kg quarter-final bout. Male pugilists Vikas Krishan and Gaurav Solanki made it to their respective semi-finals, assuring at least two more Bronze medals for India.

In Badminton, star shuttlers Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth will begin their quest for individual medals today. Men's Hockey, having already qualified for the semi-finals, India will take on England in their group match this afternoon.

All India Radio will broadcast live commentary on the match. It can be heard on Rajdhani, FM Gold and other channels from 2:55 pm onwards. India is currently third in the medals tally, with 12 Gold, 4 Silver and 8 Bronze. Australia continues to be at the top, with England second.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated Shooters Shreyasi Singh, Ankur Mittal and Om Mitharval for bagging medals in the Commonwealth Games today.

In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, Indian shooters continue to make the country proud. Mr Modi said the shooting contingent has truly excelled in the Games.
