The 32-hour countdown for tomorrow's launch of IRNSS-1L onboard PSLV rocket is progressing smoothly at the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The countdown began at 8:04 PM yesterday, and the launch will take place at 4:04 tomorrow morning.
The 1,425-kg satellite, which is a part of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), will be the ninth of the satellite series. It will be a replacement for IRNSS-1A, the mission of which has ended in a failure.
Like its other IRNSS predecessors, IRNSS-1L carries two types of payloads - navigation payload and ranging payload. The satellite is also called Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). The navigation payload of IRNSS-1L will transmit navigation service signals to the users.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said NavIC is useful for fishermen to reach the potential fishing area. The fishermen can also get alert messages relating to bad weather, high waves or when they approach international maritime boundary line.
The satellite will also be useful for merchant ships in their navigation and also during search and rescue operations. In the road transport sector, NavIC will help commuters to traverse distances and also enable transport operators to track their vehicles. It will also helpful for railways in tracking trains and also giving an alert in the case of the unmanned level crossing.
