One person is dead and another injured after an early morning multi-vehicle collision in the eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401 approaching Pickering, police said Wednesday.
The crash occurred in a construction zone east of Whites Road around 1 a.m. Four vehicles were involved, including a truck that was distributing cones and barrels for an upcoming lane closure.
According to Ontario Provincial Police, the driver killed in the crash was side-swiped by another car and slammed into the construction truck, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle subsequently flipped, killing the driver at the scene.
One other person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
The families of those involved have been notified, and OPP's collision reconstruction unit is currently investigating the crash.
The eastbound collector lanes were closed at Port Union Road until shortly before 8 a.m., but have since reopened to traffic.
