The Dublin City School District's dodgeball tournament, held April 6 at Scioto High School, should be on target to meet the district's $15,000 fundraising goal, said Superintendent Todd Hoadley.
The event has raised $14,000, Hoadley said, and the money still is being collected.
Thousands of people attended the tournament, said Doug Baker, district spokesman.
Part of the proceeds this year will go towards providing hurricane relief for Puerto Rico, which was hit in September by hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Dublin Bridges, a nonprofit charity that connects people with community organizations, also will receive a portion of the event proceeds.
Money from the event will also go toward the 3rd & Goal Foundation.
That foundation, founded by Coffman graduate and former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback Brady Quinn, helps veterans in need of homes and home improvements.
Quinn attended the event April 6, traveling from Florida to participate, Hoadley said.
A portion of money raised also will benefit the Memorial Scholarship funds of Scioto students Lyndsey Rice and Kyle Colello, who died in a November 2009 car accident.
Hoadley said he was proud of the student advisory group that planned the event.
Each year, the group comprised of two students from each grade level at Coffman, Scioto and Jerome high schools selects beneficiaries and prepares for the dodgeball event, Hoadley said.
The event is also special because the district's schools work together to raise money for local charities, Hoadley said.
"It reinforces that we are a school district and not a district of schools," Hoadley said.
For the first time, Dublin City Council members also joined in the event, forming a team of their own, Hoadley said.
"I so much appreciate the support of our Dublin City Council," he said.
Olde Sawmill Elementary School won the adult tournament, Baker said.
Daniel Wright Elementary School, Willard Grizzell Middle School and Dublin Coffman High School won the elementary, middle school and high school tournaments, respectively.
