Reconstruction on M-46 just east of Gratiot County – including through the towns of Merrill and Hemlock – begins next week and will run until next fall, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

Work on the project, from M-52 west to Merrill, starts Monday.

It will be done sometime in October.

Total cost of the project is $13 million and will include reconstruction of 10.4 miles, including drainage improvements and replacement of five culverts.

M-46 traffic will be maintained with flag control accept for two stretches when full detours will be required for culvert replacement.

From approximately May 21 through July 2, M-46 will be detoured via Hemlock Road, Frost Road and Orr Road to accommodate the culvert replacement at Raucholz Road.

And from approximately July 6 through Aug. 31, M-46 traffic from Chapin Road to Iva Road will detoured via Meridian Road, Frost Road and Hemlock Road.

To help maintain additional traffic on the suggested detour routes, the intersection of Frost Road and Orr Road will become a temporary four-way stop.
