CHENNAI:
Children’s Park in Guindy will remain closed on Thursday for “administrative reasons,” the forest department said in a statement on Wednesday. The move coincides with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to
Adyar Cancer Institute, which is adjacent to the park, on Thursday.
Every day the park receives at least 600 visitors, and 1,000-1500 on holidays.
Although forest officials did not specifically cite Modi’s visit as the reason, sources said they had received instructions to close the park for security reasons.
Modi’s visit to neighbouring Cancer Institute is mired in controversy. Officials demolished a wall that divides the Children’s Park and Cancer Institute campus to make parking space for the PM’s convoy. Modi will inaugurate a few facilities at the cancer institute.
