HILLSDALE — A Syracuse woman was arrested on Saturday for allegedly possessing 6.6 grams of cocaine and a quantity of suboxone, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said.
Meleya A. McKay, 19, was traveling in a vehicle that was stopped by deputies at 10:23 a.m. on Route 23 for a traffic violation. During the stop, deputies located found that McKay was in possession of the cocaine and the Suboxone, a controlled substance, that she did not have a prescription for, the sheriff's office said.
Suboxone, the brand name for buprenorphine, is a controversial drug used to lessen some harmful effects of addiction but also sold on the street illegally.
The driver was released, but McKay was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. She was arraigned in Claverack Town Court and sent to the Columbia County jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
After arriving in the jail, correction officers found another 22 grams of cocaine that she hid on her body, the sheriff's office said. The investigation is continuing and additional felony charges are pending.
