A 29-year-old man is facing manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a another man at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre, following an assault at the provincial jail last October.

Two men were originally charged with aggravated assault on Oct. 23, 2017, the day the assault took place.

Ten days later, Cornell Henry died in hospital from his injuries.

Henry was being held in custody while awaiting the court process. At the time of his death, Henry was technically no longer considered an inmate of the province because the charges against him were withdrawn following the assault.

Nathan Ermine's aggravated assault charges have been upgraded to manslaughter. He will appear in court on April 24.

Raven Don Constant is also facing charges for his alleged role in the assault against Henry. He will appear in court on April 19.

At the time of Henry's death, both suspects were waiting for court proceedings for charges related to previous violent attacks.

Ermine was on remand and accused of aggravated assault, possession, robbery and theft.

Constant had been on remand at different correctional centres since early 2013. At the time of the alleged assault at the Saskatoon jail, he was about to stand trial for second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Three days into his trial, he pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault.
