Ground has been broken for a $19 million campground that will include equestrian camping and day-use areas at the site of the former Frontier Town amusement park.

The new facilities will connect to an existing trail network to part of the Schroon Lake — North Hudson snowmobile trail network, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

In addition, Schroon Lake-based Paradox Brewery will spend $5.2 million on a new brewery and taproom. The investment includes the building and brewing equipment, as well as a waste treatment system.

Paradox will benefit from a $200,000 Empire State Development grant and $300,000 in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits to create 22 jobs. The Development Authority of the North Country will provide $500,000 to help pay for the demolition at the Frontier Town site.

The all-season day-use area will open in the fall of 2018, while the campground and equestrian campground will be fully operational by the summer of 2019.

Plans for private development at the site are unclear. One potential developer, Jeff Hyman, said he had responded to the state's request for proposals but hasn't heard anything. He had proposed a retail and recreational development called The Great 21st Century Adirondack Base Camp.

A spokesman at Empire State Development couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
