A Wichita Falls woman is accused of shooting a handgun three times outside her relative's house to blow off some steam and try out the new weapon.
Birdie Jean Jackson, 36, is charged with discharging of a firearm in certain municipalities – a Class A misdemeanor. She was out of the Wichita County Jail Wednesday afternoon on $1,000 bail.
According to a probable cause affidavit:
Around 6:18 p.m. Tuesday, Wichita Falls police were called to the area of Irene Lane and Harding Street for gunshots.
An anonymous caller said they heard three gunshots at that intersection and saw a newer white Suburban speed away westbound on Harding Street.
Officers located three shell casings sitting in the front dirt yard of a residence in the 800 block of Irene Lane. They knocked on the door several times, but no one answered.
While the officers were getting ready to document the shell casings, a white Suburban matching the suspect vehicle pulled onto Irene Lane. The vehicle immediately turned around upon the driver seeing police.
The officers got back into their vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which pulled into the parking lot of Booker T. Washington Elementary.
The driver of the vehicle, a white 2008 GMC Yukon, was identified as Jackson. The officer told her that her vehicle matched the description of the suspect vehicle and asked Jackson what happened at the residence on Irene Lane.
Jackson reportedly said she had just purchased a handgun from a local pawn shop and went to the residence to blow off some steam and try out the firearm.
Jackson said she fired one round into the ground and two more into the air at the residence, which she said belonged to her second aunt.
She told the officer that her family goes to the property often to shoot guns because the aunt has a lot of land.
The officer had Jackson get out of the vehicle. She said the gun was locked inside the glove box and gave officers permission to search the SUV.
Inside the locked glove box, officers found a 40-caliber Taurus handgun with one live round in the chamber and five live rounds in the 10-round magazine.
On the middle seat of the Yukon, officers located a Crown Royal bag with two more 10-round magazines.
Jackson also told officers where the receipt was for the gun. The receipt showed the gun was purchased on March 23.
