Hilliard Davidson High School drama students will perform "Grease" this weekend.
Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Davidson's performing-arts-center, 5100 Davidson Road.
Tickets are available at localevel.com and at the door. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.
Davidson last performed "Grease" in 2007, said Davidson's drama-department director Trace Crawford, who is directing the play again in 2018, which is the 40th anniversary of the film release starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
"I chose Grease because, one, it is fun, and, two, almost everyone has seen it or knows it," Crawford said.
It also remains appealing to students because "they can still relate to the characters in the story," he said.
"There is more than one side to everyone, a side that is not readily seen," Crawford said, just as those "other sides" of main characters Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski are revealed in the play.
Senior Aidan Mayfield is cast as Danny and senior Payton Gehring will play the role of Sandy.
Mayfield said he knows the material well, especially the music. The film spawned multiple hit records, including the duet, "You're the One That I Want."
Mayfield is a member of Davidson's marching band, choir and male vocal group "Boys in Blue."
Gehring also is a member of the school's choir and the girl's vocal counterpart, "Blue Ladies."
"I've always loved music," said Mayfield, who taught himself to play the guitar and piano.
Mayfield said he strives to keep "a little mystery about what is in Danny's head" while on stage.
"This is the role I wanted," he said.
