The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come out blasting Congress president Rahul Gandhi and demanding an apology from him hours after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony before the US Congress over the data sharing scandal.

Union Information and Technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad took to Twitter demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi. Prasad asserted that Cambridge Analytica's role in manipulating elections in India in favour of the Congress stands exposed following Zuckerberg's testimony.

"Now that Cambridge Analytica‘s role in manipulating elections is clear & Facebook has assured to stop it and maintain integrity of India’s elections, probity demands that @RahulGandhi should apologise & promise not to manipulate voters and divide the society in future!" Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg during his congressional hearing said he wants to ensure protection of integrity of elections, mentioning that he knows the importance of the upcoming polls in countries, including India, Hungary and Brazil.

He noted that there are several important elections in 2018 in countries like India, Hungary and Brazil and his company wants to ensure protection of integrity in these elections.

The social media giant had earlier informed the government that private data of over 5.6 lakh Indian Facebook users was compromised by a private marketing firm that later sold the personal details acquired through a quiz app to Cambridge Analytica, a UK-based company at the centre of a global privacy breach storm.
