Dennis Briggs, 58, of New Galilee led all bowlers with a personal-best 821 series in the Baden Men's Classic League at Baden Bowl. He shot 268, 255 and 298 for his third 800 set.
"Practice didn't do me any good. The ball I used did nothing. I put it away and used another ball that was more aggressive. The first shot was a good strike; the second ball I got lucky and left a 2 pin. I got lined up and started throwing good shots the rest of the night. The second game was a little iffy, strike-spare kind of thing. Going into the last game, I knew I needed a 279 for the 800, but that was an afterthought. As I started striking, I was thinking I could do something here. The first shot in the 10th was packed, and I figured I got the 800. The 11th shot I tripped the 9 pin. On the last ball, I left the 4-7 pins. The only thing that was funny was the 298 game, our team only won by eight pins,'' Briggs said.
Elise Brown of Aliquippa led the local women with a 730 set in the Monaca Community League at Baden Bowl. She had a 227, 257 and 246 for her sixth 700, her third this season.
"I tried to stay focused. I kept my hand underneath the ball, took my time and threw it out there. The 227 turned into a 257 when I adjusted. I moved back a little bit to give the ball a chance to roll. I threw maybe one or two bad balls, but I picked up a big split and stayed pretty clean. After the first two games, I tried not to think about a 700 ,but I got on a string of strikes and I stayed consistent,'' Brown said.
Three bowlers rolled 300s this week, Matt Hamilton of Koppel, Jared Weidner of Chippewa Township and Edward F. Mann of Darlington.
Hamilton, 36, tossed his 22nd 300 in first game of the Beaver Falls City League at Sims Lanes in Big Beaver
"I just polished a ball that I wasn't having a whole lot of luck with. I punched a weight hole in it, and it worked. I wanted it to go longer and smooth it out, and that's what it did. I had a good line, and they were all there,'' Hamilton said.
Both Weidner and Mann rolled their first 300s in the Alex Sims Memorial League at Sims Lanes.
Weidner, 34, rolled his 300 in the third game. He finished the night with 18 strikes in a row.
"I think I read the lanes better. I kept with my pattern and stayed with the same line the last two games. I've done the 11 in a row before, but going into the 12th ball, I took my time and stayed focused. I hit my mark and maintained my speed, and that did it. It was real exciting,'' Weidner said.
Mann, 44, rolled his 300 in the second game.
"I really never started thinking about the 300 until the first ball in the 10th. I just got the ball out in front of me and hit my mark and followed through. The third ball I moved two boards to the left because last month I had a chance at 300 and the ball never came back. But this time, I got lucky because I pulled the ball two boards inside and it came up real high and tripped out the 7 pin. I'll never forget it, I'll never forget my first one,'' Mann said.
Amy Leasure of Edinburg rolled a 267, the women's high game, in the first game of the Saturday Nite Nuts League at Sims Lanes.
In other action, two bowlers rolled 299s, Rich Husing of Ellwood City and Chuck Bible of Center Township. Husing left a 6 pin on his final pitch in the third game of the Monaca Community League. Bible fired his 299 in the second game of the Beaver Valley Tenpin Travel League at Baden Bowl. He left a 10 pin on his final ball.
Three bowlers tossed 290s, Kevin Richardson of Slippery Rock, Lou Sposaro of Ambridge and Rob Haller of Beaver. Richardson left a solid 9 pin in the first frame of the third game of the Friday Night Classic League at Sims Lanes. Sposaro began his night with a stone 9 pin in the Beaver Valley Tenpin Travel League at Baden Bowl. In the Competitive Doubles League at Beaver Valley Bowl in Rochester, Haller left the 1-2 pins in the first frame of his second game.
