Kelsey's wedding has a silver lining

She had the bronze in the bag and one throw left to upgrade.  From the roar Kelsey-Lee Roberts unleashed you just knew she'd done exactly that.

The Canberra javelin thrower had left to last and it took a new Commonwealth Games and Australian record to stop her from winning gold.

That honour went to the evergreen Kathryn Mitchell, with the 35-year-old's 68.92 metres out of reach.

Canberra's Kelsey-Lee Roberts won silver with her last throw.

In contrast, Roberts was under pressure to produce with her sixth and final throw.

Her opening throw of 60.81m had already guaranteed her of equalling the bronze medal she won at the Glasgow Games four years ago.

As she unleashed the fury, the accompanying scream almost defied the javelin to be anywhere but beyond the mark of second-placed South African Sunette Viljoen.

And at 63.89m - just 0.68m short of the personal best she threw two weeks ago - it was good enough to set up an Australian one-two behind the remarkable Mitchell.

Now Roberts will have a special silver necklace to adorn the wedding dress she'll wear when she marries her coach Mike Barber at the end of the month.

It caps a remarkable comeback from just two years ago when stress fractures ruined her build-up to the Olympic Games in Brazil.

Meanwhile, fellow Canberrans Keely Small (800m heats), and Rebecca and Dan McConnell (women's and men's cross country mountain bike) are also in action.
