Dengue count reaches 25 this year

The number of dengue cases has reached 25 this year, according to a data released by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday. The number of people affected by malaria and chikungunya stands at four and three, respectively.

Out of 25 cases of dengue, 13 patients belong to neighbouring States. According to the SDMC, mosquito breeding was reported from 2,293 Delhi households.

In order to curb the menace of vector-borne diseases, the civic bodies have already decided to spray ‘Alpha Cyper Methrin’ insecticide, which remains effective for three months from the date of spraying, an SDMC official said.

Besides, the civic body has also taken a number of measures to prevent mosquito breeding, including creating awareness by using various media, deploying more mosquito breeding checkers, and desilting of drains, the official said.

A senior SDMC official said the spraying will be done during months of May and June in the first phase whereas the second phase will be carried out during July and August.

“The spray will be especially concentrated in JJ and rehabilitation colonies as these areas are very suitable for breeding,” he said.

With the move, the SDMC officials believe that the approaching menace of vector-borne diseases can be checked as the mosquitoes will be paralysed after coming in contact with such insecticide.

Indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides is the main vector control strategy adopted in the National Vector-Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in India to control malaria transmission.
