Cedar Rapids Kernels improve to 4-0 with 8-6 win at Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. — Ben Rortvedt went 4-for-4 as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat Peoria, 8-6, Tuesday afternoon at Dozer Park in Midwest League baseball.

The Kernels are 4-0. The teams play against Wednesday.

Rortvedt is 8 for 16 in three games this season. His double led to a three-run second inning for Cedar Rapids.

The Kernels scored four times in the sixth for a 7-1 lead, holding off a Peoria rally. The Chiefs, who got two triples and a double from Juan Yepez, had a run each in the seventh and eighth and scored three runs in the ninth, bringing the tying run to home plate.

Jose Martinez struck out Bryce Denton to end a game that featured 25 hits, 15 from Cedar Rapids. Starting pitcher Tyler Watson (1-0) picked up the pitching win, allowing three hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings.

Jose Miranda, Alex Kirilloff, Trey Cabbage and Mark Contreras had two hits apiece for the Kernels. Kirilloff drove in three runs and Cabbage two.
