Stocks bounce back as trade tensions ebb

U.S. stocks ended sharply higher on Tuesday after China President Xi Jinping's comments helped to ease fears that a trade war would break out between the world's two largest economies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.79% advanced around 427 points, or 1.8%, to finish near 24,406, according to preliminary data. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.67% picked up 44 points, or 1.7%, to 2,657. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +2.07% added 144 points, or 2.1%, to 7,094. Benchmark equity indexes booked their fifth positive session of the past six. As part of a broad-based rally, ten of the 11 S&P 500 sectors posted gains.
