When Hakan Karacay, a then-28-year-old immigrant from Turkey who lived in New Jersey, disappeared 19 years ago, State Police found no trace of him.

On Sept. 20, 1999, he left his home in a car that later was found in an isolated part of Lewis in Essex County.

The Clifton Police Department in New Jersey received a missing person report about Karacay the day after he vanished.

State Police said Karacay is the subject of an active missing person case and they are still looking for tips on him. They said he was depressed when he vanished.

Troopers said Karacay did not take along his medication when he disappeared. On Sept. 25, 1999, state troopers in New York were told of a suspicious vehicle on Wells Road in Lewis. Troopers said they found the 1989 Mazda connected to Karacay but they found no sign of him nor any sign of foul play.

A massive search of the area was carried out by state troopers, forest rangers and conservation officers. Karacay was never found and troopers say no evidence was developed to determine if he or someone else drove his car to Lewis.

Troopers described him as 6-foot-2, weighing 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes at the time of his disappearance. He was last seen wearing a gray, short-sleeved collared shirt, khaki pants and black dress shoes.
