Fire crews have closed down Estero Boulevard due to an apparent smoke event at the Creciente Condominiums, according to the Fort Myers Beach Fire Department.
Fire Chief Matt Love said they are evacuating people in the condominium as a precaution.
Traffic is being routed through the parking lot of the Santini Plaza in the 7000 block of Estero Boulevard.
Wayne Allen said he heard the alarm go off and peeked outside his door when he saw some smoke in the hallway.
The 70-year-old lives on the ninth floor and retreated to the lanai until firefighters got to him.
"They got me and brought me down," Allen said.
