Transgender injured
Goal Coast: After warming some hearts and causing resentment to others, New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard - the first transgender to compete at the Commonwealth Games was left in tears when she had to withdraw from women's +90kg weightlifting competition owing to a dislocated shoulder. Hubbard retired from Monday's competition after hurting her shoulder on her final snatch. She suffered shoulder dislocation and dropped the bar behind her. Hubbard said she gave it her all while going for the Commonwealth record in snatch. "It's obviously a difficult time. But the one thing I am happiest about is that I tried to reach for my best performance. This happens sometimes, but that's sport," she said fighting back tears.
Robert Pitcairn has flown in the military and foiled a potential hijacker on a commercial flight. So targeting a record as the oldest competitor to debut at the Commonwealth Games hasn't been too daunting. The 79-year-old Canadian made his debut Monday in the Queen's Prize Pairs Finals in the full bore shooting competition. He and teammate Nicole Rossignol were placed ninth after the first day of the final. At 79 years and nine months old, he broke the record previously held by England's Doreen Flanders, who took part in lawn bowls at Glasgow in 2014 a few weeks after her 79th birthday.
