Lively sessions at SPC summer camp

Physical training, parade rehearsal, and field visits form part of routine of 605 participants

It’s that time of the year again when Student Police Cadets (SPC) from across the district get together to strike friendships and interact with well-known personalities as they set about developing their character, teamwork, and leadership skills.

As many as 605 Class 9 students, including 398 girls, representing 19 city schools, are taking part in the six-day district-level summer camp, Pratheeksha-2018, at the Sri Ayyankali Memorial Government Model Residential Sports School at Vellayani.

The programme, which was formally inaugurated by Governor P. Sathasivam on Saturday, will conclude on April 12 with a ceremonial parade that will be inspected by Electricity Minister M.M. Mani.

The camp is being led by Assistant Commissioner (Control Room) V. Suresh Kumar, who is the district nodal officer of the SPC project (Thiruvananthapuram city).

According to the organisers, the daily routine of the cadets involved undertaking physical training, Yoga and Kalari training, and parade rehearsal at the school grounds from 6.30 a.m. onwards.

The students have been divided into six batches, three of which will be allotted indoor programmes, while the rest are taken for field visits to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Kuthiramalika Palace, Chitranjali Studio, and other places.

Besides, the cadets will take turns in handling the daily chores, including tidying up their rooms, and cleaning the surroundings.

A clean-up drive was organised on the banks of Vellayani Lake.

The students are also set to volunteer for a medical camp that will be organised in colonies.

Sessions by experts

Several subject experts, including Police Training College Principal K. Sethu Raman, Resident Medical Officer (Palliative Medicine) at the Regional Cancer Centre C.V. Prasanth, and psychiatrist Arun B. Nair are among those who have conducted classes so far.

In the evenings, the students are provided with opportunities to interact with famous personalities.

Filmmaker R.S. Vimal, actor Alencier Ley Lopez, and football icon I.M. Vijayan are among those who have interacted with the students so far.

The day’s activities come to an end with cultural programmes by the cadets.

A highlight of the camp would be the presentation of a 45-minute dance-drama, Bharatheeyam, which will focus on the freedom movement and the founding principles of the nation, on the penultimate day on April 11.
