56 cows die after eating plant shoots in Gurazala

In a tragic incident, 56 cows died after eating secondary shoots of jowar plants farm at Daida village in Gurazala mandal late on Sunday night.

Revenue Divisional Officer, Gurazala, G. Murali said that the cause of death is poisoning as the secondary shoots secrete hydrocyanic acid.

The acid is secreted in plants when there water stress.

A team of veterinary personnel led by Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry department M. Hanumantha Rao rushed to the village and rescued 30 cows.

They were given emergency treatment and later treated at the veterinary hospital at Gurazala.

The cows were found dead on Monday morning. The RDO and the AD, Animal Husbandry, M. Hanumanthu Rao visited the farm and completed the inquest.

The cows belong to Gundala Lakshmaiah, a native of Kasurajupalli of Neredugummu mandal in Nalgonda. They came to the village on Sunday evening and started grazing at the farm.

The tragic incident also exposed the drought condition prevailing in areas under Nagarjuna Sagar Right Canal ayacut.
