LOS ANGELES: "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" has become the top-grossing play in Broadway history, despite still being in previews.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the play reported the highest single-week gross for a non-musical in only its third week of previews.

Centered on the boy wizard's own children, "Harry Potter And The Cursed Child" (Parts 1 and 2) played its first eight-show week at Broadway's Lyric theater, and grossed a record-breaking USD 2,138,859.

The previous record-holder was "All The Way", the 2014 Lyndon B Johnson play anchored by Bryan Cranston.

That show's best week was just over USD 1.62 million - half a million below Harry Potter.

In its first full week of previews, "Cursed Child" exceeded the USD 2 million mark, which is an extra magical feat given that 300 seats at every performance are selling for USD 40 or less.

However, the Lyric Theatre, which is home to "Cursed Child", has approximately 200 more seats than the Neil Simon Theatre, which was home to "All the Way".

The production, which broke Olivier Award records in London, winning nine, more than any other play or musical in West End history, officially opens Sunday, April 22.
