Akhilesh Yadav demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath

Samjawaid party president Akhilesh Yadav demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the killing of a gang rape victim’s father in judicial custody in Unnao on Monday. Akhilesh also demanded a high-level probe into the incident and asked the Chief Minister to own moral responsibility and step down from his office.

On Monday, the rape victim’s father Pappu, who was arrested on April 5, died in judicial custody. The girl’s family alleged that Pappu was murdered in judicial custody by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his goons, named as accused by the victim. 

On Sunday, the gang rape victim tried to immolate herself near the Chief Minister’s official residence at Kalidas Marg alleging that she was raped by BJP legislator from Unnao Kuldeep Singh Senger and his aides and that the police was not acting on her complaint.  

The victim also said that she and her family were threatened after they had filed an FIR, which the police had registered after stalling it for a year.

The family further alleged that the MLA’s brother thrashed the woman’s father for refusing to cancel the FIR on April 5, but the police arrested the father instead. As many as six police personnel were suspended and four accused were arrested for beating up the rape victim’s father.

In 2012 polls, Sengar was elected to the assembly on a Samajwadi Party ticket from Bangarmau segment in Unnao. In 2017, he switched sides and was re-elected to the Assembly from same seat on a BJP ticket.  

DIG (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar said that a magisterial inquiry would be conducted and action will be taken against the police is any lapses were found.
