President Donald Trump wanted to fire special counsel Robert Mueller in December, the New York Times reported late Tuesday, leading to fresh concerns that the president may try to shut down the investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion. At the time, Trump was outraged by reports that Mueller had subpoenaed documents concerning his business dealings with Deutsch Bank DB, +0.50% the Times said, crossing Trump's "red line" of topics that were off-limits to Mueller's probe. Trump backed down after the reports turned out to be inaccurate, the Times said. Trump had previously sought to fire Mueller last summer, the Times reported in January. The new report comes a day after the FBI raided the office of Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, again raising the possibility that the investigation had crossed Trump's "red line." On Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump believes he has the power to fire Mueller, despite warnings from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle not to do so.
