Officials told to intensify mosquito eradication drive

District Collector U.V. Jose has asked officials to intensify mosquito eradication drive in the wake of a rise in indigenous malaria cases. At two separate meetings here on Tuesday, he said steps should be taken to maintain hygiene at the residences of migrant labourers.

At a meeting of the Arogya Jagrata scheme, District Medical Officer V. Jayashree said local bodies should take initiatives to clean public places, markets and houses. Roadside sale of eatables should be regulated. She sought a meeting of estate owners to clear vegetation and avoid leaving coconut shells in the open to avoid breeding of mosquitoes. There was a chance of people storing water in containers in the event of water scarcity. The containers should be closed as mosquitoes would breed if they were left open for more than a week, she said. Mr. Jose said pre-monsoon cleaning works should be undertaken as early as possible.

At another meeting of boat owners and those employed in the construction sector, Mr. Jose said action would be initiated against those who deny basic facilities to migrant labourers.
