fciac: girls lacrosse: Darien 21, Ridgefield 6 Darien rolls by Tigers

RIDGEFIELD — All they do is win.
For the last five-plus years against in-state teams, at least.
The Darien girls lacrosse team ran its win streak to 93 in a row against teams from Connecticut in another rout, getting goals from a host of different players in a 21-6 win over FCIAC Ridgefield Tuesday. The Blue Wave — who last lost a game against a team in the Nutmeg State in the 2012 Class M tournament — took the rematch of last year’s FCIAC final with ease.
“Wow, that is a lot,” Blue Wave coach Lisa Lindley said. “I don’t remind them of it; we want to win every game obviously but as you keep winning the teams in the league are getting better. On any given day we can get knocked off.”
That day hasn’t happened in-state for the Blue Wave — who have mixed results against out-of-state opponents over the last several years — since the current seniors were in middle school. There was a hint of a upset early as the score was deadlocked at 2-2 midway through the first half before the visitors stormed away.
“There was a lot of (physical play) so we definitely had to work through that today,” said Darien senior Christine Fiore, who scored three times Tuesday. “Overall we played as a team and we worked well together.”
Ashley Humphrey scored five times for the Blue Wave, while Nicole Humphrey added a hat trick. Darien scored nine straight goals at one point.
“I thought we were good in transition,” Lindley said. “Coming up with the draw and finding the open player; we talked about not being negative, keeping your cool and working through it. It was a good test, Ridgefield is a talented team, I’m sure that we will see them again.”
The Tigers have suffered back-to-back heavy losses against the FCIAC elite after falling to Greenwich 20-10 last time out. Caroline Curnal scored three times for Ridgefield while Abby Winkler added a pair.
ON YOUR MARK
The Blue Wave are far from a finished product by their own standards as chemistry and execution are the main early-season focuses. Darien earned a hard-fought 12-10 win over Ridgewood (New Jersey), avenging a loss last year.
Darien currently sits at No. 3 in the Nike/USLacrosse national rankings.
“We want to establish an overall dominance on every part of the field,” Fiore said. “From our goalie all the way to our attacking end, we want to be the best team we can be.”
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Sarah Jaques, Darien: The Northwestern commit controlled the game, scoring three times and dishing out four assists.
