C.V. Wigneswaran, the first Tamil Chief Minister of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, will not be backed by his party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for another term amidst his differences with the party, said its parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran on Sunday.

Sources said they would opt for veteran leader Mavai Senathiraja as the chief ministerial candidate at the next election to be held later this year.

Mr. Wigneswaran, 78, a retired Supreme Court judge, was elected with over 80% of the Tamil vote. But, of late, has been at loggerheads with the TNA over its policy towards the national unity government.
