As a new car reviewer these days I spend most of my time behind the wheel of an SUV. In the first quarter of the year alone there’s been European and UK launches for the BMW X2, Ford Ecosport, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, Skoda Karoq, Range Rover Plug-in Hybrid, Seat Arona, Volvo XC40... 

I could go on – so I will. There’s the V8 Bentley Bentayga, Jaguar E-Pace, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Subaru XV, Porsche Cayenne, Kia Sorento and more.

Even those manufacturers who previously shied away from the format for reasons of cost or principle have now realised that to not have a high-riding car in their range is simply not viable, hence why the likes of Alfa Romeo, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Lamborghini...
