SA's Binedell bombs in 200m backstroke final

2018-04-09 11:44

Cape Town - South Africa's Martin Binedell has finished sixth in the final of the 200m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old, who was eliminated in the heats of the same event at last year's World Aquatics Championships, had qualified fastest for Monday's final.

Having started in lane 4, Binedell could not capitalise on his semi-final form.

He was never in contention as he swam to a time of 1:57.87.

Australia claimed all three podium places with Mitch Larkin (1:56.10) winning followed by Bradley Woodward and Josh Beaver.

South Africa's Kate Beavon, meanwhile, finished last in her 800m freestyle final.

Australia who dominated in that race, too, winning all three medals again through Ariarne Titmus, Jessica Ashwood and Kiah Melverton.
