CWC Chairman pats TS on Kaleshwaram project

Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairman S. Masood Husain has appreciated the Telangana government for the speedy execution of work on the Kaleshwaram irrigation project aimed at creation of over 18 lakh acres of new irrigation potential and stabilising another 18 lakh acres of the existing command area.

Mr. Husain, along with two other senior engineers of the CWC – Chief Engineer in the Water Planning and Projects Wing and Director of Irrigation Planning (South) B.C. Vishwakarma – visited the ongoing work of the Kaleshwaram project in Jayashankar-Bhupalapally and Peddapally districts on Monday.

Speaking to mediapersons at the Laxmipur tunnel, the CWC Chairman observed that “he had not seen any other irrigation project executed with the pace with which work on Kaleshwaram was being carried out”. He complimented the State government for executing the irrigation project works in tune with the deadlines set. He stated that he would suggest to other senior engineers in CWC to visit the Kaleshwaram project to see the “great work in the making”.

On behalf of the State government, Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao, Engineer-in-Chief C. Muralidhar, and Chief Engineer N. Venkateshwarlu accompanied the CWC Chairman during the visit.

Mr. Husain and other CWC officials examined the works at the Medigadda barrage site, the Kannepally pump house and other key components such as tunnels and pump houses in Packages 6 and 8 in Medaram and Ramadugu mandals.

Meeting deadline

Along with Mr. Harish Rao, the Chief Engineer of the project explained the aspects of project design, redesign, execution and the status of works to the CWC team. They told the CWC Chairman that the works were being executed on a war footing to meet the June-July deadline for lifting at least one tmc ft water for supplementing the Sriramasagar command area.

Further, they explained that over 6,000 cubic meters of cement-concrete mix was being used every day. Works would be carried out with the same pace for the next two-three months.

“At a time when the works on all major components of the project, particularly the ones required for lifting one tmc ft water every day to supplement the Sriramsagar ayacut from the coming kharif season, are galloping to meet the deadlines set by the State government, the compliments from the CWC Chairman will boost our morale further to put in better work”, a senior engineer, who accompanied by the CWC team during the visit, told The Hindu.
