In Uttar Pradesh, nomination process began today for biennial polls to 13 seats of the Legislative council. Notification for the poll has been issued for the elections. The last date for filing nominations is April 16. The election will be held on April 26.
AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that arrangements for nominations have been made at the central hall of Vidhan Bhawan. Any major political party including ruling BJP has not announced their candidates so far for the poll.
Main opposition Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have entered into the alliance to contest the poll. Congress has also announced to support the alliance candidates.
After securing a thumping win in the recently concluded biennial Rajya Sabha elections from the state the ruling BJP is confident of securing at least 11 council seats on the basis of its strength in the assembly along with its allies. Tenures of 13 MLCs will end on May 5.
They are including Samajwadi Party national president and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, party's state unit chief Naresh Chandra Uttam, party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary, Umar Ali Khan, Madhu Gupta, Ramsakal Gurjar and Vijay Yadav, two ministers in the Yogi Adityanath-led government, Mahendra Kumar Singh and Mohsin Raza, BSP's Vijay Pratap and Sunil Kumar Chittor and lone RLD member Chaudhary Mushtaq. The thirteenth seat was held by former SP government minister Ambika Chaudhary.
