However, the world No 4 missed some crucial shots, which coupled with Spieth’s increasable under-par performance, took Reed to a nervy finish.
Tiger Woods also made his long-awaited return to a major championship but he disappointed with only one below-par round.
The total prize money for the Masters stands at $11million (£7.8m) but it is shared out between the competitiors dependant on how they finish in the leaderboard.
How is the Masters prize money split?
According to golfnewsnet.com, even if a player misses the cut this week they are still guaranteed $10,000 (£7,097).
Finishing 51st will earn $26,620 (£18,893).
Players ranking between 50th and 6th will pocket between $27,220 (£19,319) and $396,000 (£281,064).
Fifth-placed finalists take home $440,000 (£312,294) with fourth banking $528,000 (£374,753).
The stakes are raised with a top-three finish as the funds are increase to $748,000 (£530,900).
