However, it should not be the only filter used to select stocks to buy or sell. Investors should use other technical parameters such as MACD, RSI, Supertrend Indicator, and other momentum indicators before placing your bet.
Likewise, when the stock price or the index level is trading below this crucial mark it is considered as a crucial resistance level for the index. This particular moving average comes in handy when determining the overall trend for the market.
As long as the index level of the stock price is trading above the 200-DMA and 200-DEMA on the daily time frame, the stock is generally considered in an uptrend. On the other hand, if the stock price if trading below this key level it is considered to be in a downtrend.
“The Nifty indeed has been oscillating around its 200-DEMA since the last few sessions. At the same time, there are certain stocks that are comfortably trading above their respective 200-DEMA,” Gaurav Ratnaparkhi, Senior Technical Analyst, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas told Moneycontrol.
“While it is a good strategy to look at strong ones when identifying buy-side trading ideas, one should undertake stock specific approach during volatile times. Instead of looking at a moving average in isolation, one should consider various parameters and take into account weight of evidence approach,” he said.
In the month of March, Nifty slipped below its 200-DMA on 19 March and it took 7 trading sessions for the index to close above its 200-DMA. The Nifty50 index closed above this crucial level on April 2, 2018.
